In Yayoi Kusama’s latest venture, she collaborated with fashion power house Louis Vuitton in a polka dot collection. The 83-year-old Japanese artist is well-known for her avant garde style and persistent interest in the dot motif.
The collection contains polka accessories in several combinations of black, red, white and yellow, some combining Kusama’s dot print with Louis Vuitton’s signature monogram pattern. Among these accessories is a studded collar that our publisher Suzy will be sporting this fall.
In honor of Kusama’s collection, Louis Vuitton is opening seven pop-up stores in Beverly Hills, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kusama’s home city Tokyo, Paris, and London. In New York City, the shop opened on July 10, two days before her exhibition started at the Whitney Museum.
For Kusama, art is more than an outlet for her creative expressions. Paintings, sculptures, installations, psychedelic colors and patterns serve as her therapy of choice, as she has been living voluntarily at the Seiwa Hospital for the Mentally Ill since 1973.
