Have you ever noticed that in November a lot of mustaches are growing, and no, it is not because men get too lazy to shave, nor because it keeps them warmer. It is because it’s MOVEMBER.
Movember is an initiative started back in 2003 in Australia by 30 people who wanted to raise awareness around men’s health issues, especially prostate and testicular cancer.
From November 1st to December 1st, men let their moustaches grow, starting with a clean shave, and then trim, groom and take care of their best possible Mo. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo growing efforts.
From 30 people in Australia, in the past 9 years Movember reached Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Spain, UK and USA. There are now more than 854,288 registered Mo Bros and Sistas who last year raised about USD $126.3 million.
At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their accomplishments by throwing infamous parties called Gala Partés where they vote on different categories of best Mo around the world – including women sporting fake mustaches – always featuring the best examples with costumes, music and fun.
Prostate and testicular cancer touches everybody. If your country is not part of the Mo movement, maybe you could start one. Grow some Mo, raise awareness, sponsor a team on the movember.com website, and feel the power of doing good, feeling good and looking good!
