Fashion’s Night Out: Couture, Culture and Commerce Collide

The fourth annual Fashion’s Night Out (FNO) is happening tonight (September 6) in New York City, and cities all over the US plus 18 other countries, including: France, Italy, Mexico, China and India.

This global initiative was created by American Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour and CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) president Diane Von Furstenberg to put the fun back in shopping amid the recession in 2009. On this special night, stores stay open late, enhanced with food, music and entertainment. Shoppers have the opportunity to meet with designers, celebrities and models who are out in support of the event.

CFDA executive director Stephen Kolb said that the real star of the night is the merchandise. Designers create exclusive products for offline and online retailers on this occasion. FNO also puts on sale limited-edition branded handbags and T-shirts for enthusiasts. Besides boosting local economies, the evening is dedicated to making a difference: 40% of the proceeds go to the New York City AIDS Fund.

Fashion is not only an important industry in New York City, but for cities all over the globe. For us at Of Wit & Will, FNO is an exciting event because it unites people everywhere. It celebrates the collective passion for fashion, while highlighting the diversity of regions, cultures and individuals.

Many celebrities and fashion designers have appeared in Fashion’s Night Out PSAs (Public Service Announcements) to help promote this event.
