This is to be restated, on June 27th, 2012 something rather historic happened. Queen Elizabeth II shook hands with the deputy first minister of Northern Ireland, Martin McGuinness. Mr. McGuinness was formerly a commander of the Irish Republican Army. The “Troubles” as the decades-long conflict within Ireland was known, may have ended in a peace agreement in 1998, but it took another 14 years for wounds and memories to heal sufficiently to allow for this innocuous-looking photo op.
From Winston Churchill to Elvis see some other historic handshakes.
