The 64th Annual Emmy Awards made for a night of high fashion in Los Angeles, where the TV celebrities hit the Red Carpet. As a Fashion Week regular and curator of couture, I want to share my picks for the Emmys.
Sofia Vergara is in a class of one. There is no other actress at the moment who could wear the Zuhair Murad, teal, beaded, reverse halter neckline gown. The silhouette, the fit and the appropriateness to her body and to the event converge to make this look a fantastic success. Most of all, the cup size is a fit for her breasts, achieving a sexy and yes, wholesome bombshell moment.
January Jones has it all; Grace Kelly looks, career success and style confidence. Love her or hate her, you will LOOK when she walks the Red Carpet. The black, translucent, Zac Posen is a play on structure, and not quite softness, streamlined sophistication and almost Scarlett volume.
Padma Lakshmi would look lovely in a brown paper bag! In the Monique Lhuillier strapless, sweetheart bodice, tangerine, trumpet gown she is a vision. The perfect fit, elegant, unfussy look is fitting for the lily that needs no gilding.
Ginnifer Goodwin has long been a fashion maverick and this look only augments her stature. The orange/red over nude, voluminous Monique Lhuillier gown is covered in silk organza flowers that are literally reaching off the dress and toward the sun. The look also capitalized on a trend of the evening, the dip hem, nicknamed by the younger set, ‘The Mullet.’
Emily VanCamp stood elegantly in an updated, classic J. Mendel smoke-colored number. Known for his shape-creating structure, this gown is as technical within as its thunder-cloud-like exterior is romantically stormy.
With the guiding hand of Zac Posen, Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka, age 12, was the “Belle” of the 2012 Emmy Awards. Kiernan’s made-to-measure, ice blue satin, knee-length dress was accessorized with jeweler, David Webb broaches worn at the shoulders of her confection. Is this beginning of a fashion fairy tale?
The black jersey Nikki Rich gown with the V-high slit, asymmetrical neckline and sliced shoulder detail was the “cool girl” choice for American Horror Story actress, Alexandra Breckenridge. We wish though, that she had followed style-maker and contributor Rita Watnick’s advise to stand up, with arms draped comely at her sides with her lovely leg just peaking out from her gown.
Kate Mara wears-it-right, again! Pretty with an edge of attitude is how we describe her in this almost too sweet, heavily ornamented Badgley Mischka gown. We were crazy for her Oscar 2012, blush! Jack Guisso gown and look forward to seeing her “rough up” her next good girl look.
E! News, correspondent Kelly Osbourne was a vision in Orchid. The Zac Posen gown is equal parts Belle Époque and Rock Princess and is worthy of a glide through Downton Abbey. We love the silhouette, fit, confidence and minimal jewelry. Kelly’s arm candy, forearm and wrist tattoos, semi-permanent reminders of her fierce independence.
Channeling Audrey Hepburn, Emilia Clarke graced a white Chanel, tea length cocktail with an attached, full overskirt, violet embroidery. The look is a modern take on a silhouette made popular by Couturier Cristobal Balenciaga in the 1960′s.
