Gimme Those Jimmy Choos!

Unless you are a fashion-obsessed and dedicated deal finder you will find this story crazy! I have had firsthand experience with the madness of H&M’s collaboration collections because I am one of those crazy ladies you are shaking your head at who stood outside the H&M in San Francisco on a cold and rainy 4 am morning, waiting for the store to open to get my hands on Jimmy Choo. And guess what? I wasn’t early enough!

This was the first time I had ever done such a thing and it was thrilling, terrifying and overwhelming. When I was finally allowed to enter the store I scrambled to grab everything in sight. Hands full, I ran upstairs to get the coveted shoes. Since I wasn’t given one of the special wristbands to enter the marked off area, I found the next best solution- bribery. Yes, I am not joking when I tell you I gave a woman $20 to grab shoes and jewelry for me. One of my friends even paid $40 for a woman’s wristband. This was no lighthearted business- if you wanted something you had to fight for it. After a long and grueling few hours I had traded and bargained for choice items, finally leaving happy and exhausted.

If you too are one of the crazy few willing to venture out to H&M to shop the collection, don’t forget to do your homework! People start lining up at 2 am (or earlier) waiting in rain or shine to be one of the lucky 200 to shop the collection first. By noon the collection is usually sold out except for a few pieces. While Jimmy Choo for H&M sold out in an hour, the more recent Maison Martin Margiela collection ended up on sale. But don’t mistake that drop in popularity as a trend for the future- because the hysteria and demand for such collaborations isn’t ending anytime soon. H&M’s next collaboration with Isabel Marant already has people buzzing, and I can promise you that the French designer’s collection with sell out in hours.

How can I be so sure? Because H&M’s creative advisor Margareta van den Bosch has played an important and critical role in choosing the best designers, always offering something new to the H&M customer and this chic Parisian designer will be no exception. Not to be over eager, but I am already counting down the days until the collection is unveiled!

Now why would anyone spend their time waiting in line to try and shop the collection? Well, there are two types of people at these events: those who want to make a profit by reselling an item for five times the price on eBay, and those who truly love fashion but can’t necessarily afford the designer at full price. H&M has created the opportunity for fashion-conscious consumers, such as myself, to purchase a unique piece that is only owned by a select few. If you are truly dedicated to affordable fashion, then the triumph of owning such pieces is definitely worth the wait, and the memories that ensue will last a lifetime. If you don’t believe me, then take a risk and wait in line with me this coming November. I promise you won’t regret it…

Stay Tuned to hear what happens in November…
