It wasn’t always red carpets and limousines for Joan. As the ground-breaking pioneer for women in comedy, she endured years of tawdry clubs, Borscht Belt motels and Greenwich Village cabarets. Even as she reaped the rewards of her struggles, she was blindsided by her husband’s suicide and the betrayal of one of her oldest friends, Johnny Carson, who apparently begrudged her that success.
All of which would’ve been knock-down blows for most people. But 26 years later, Joan, with her stage shows, TV shows, books, clothing line and charity work, is still going strong. Very strong.
