Resort Wear: the Hidden Gem

Resort wear is a hidden gem in the fashion world. The reality design competition Project Runway regularly features a resort wear challenge since it is a necessary skill for any aspiring designer.

But where do professional designers get their inspiration for it? By imagining themselves strolling in the Bahamas, Saint Bart’s, Mustique Island, Dubai, South Africa or the Mexican Riviera, of course.

Although a condensed collection, resort wear is very versatile. Pieces vary from lightweight, casual shorts and caftans for lounging beachside to streamlined suits and floral dresses for daytime functions to glamorous, full-length gowns for formal events. Resort collections often feature themes as varied as nautical, Hawaiian, and bright florals from South America. Big hats, sunglasses and strappy sandals are must haves.

Suzy says: “Resort is a secret treasure trove – a reflection of the designer’s  state of mind and inspiration for the upcoming fashion season. A number of my favorite Fall pieces have been scooped up from the Resort collections of my go-to designers.”
